Ethical Media Coverage for a Sensitive Social Drama

By Anil Merani: “Taare Zameen Par,” scheduled for release on June 20, 2025, is a non-traditional Bollywood sports comedy-drama adapted from the Spanish film “Champions.” The movie centers on a coach who trains neurodivergent adults. Its sensitive portrayal of Down syndrome and autism, combined with Aamir Khan’s recent political controversies, raises concerns about its appeal to mainstream audiences, particularly those who prefer commercial films, and its overall box office success.

Aamir Khan’s track record, including the original “Taare Zameen Par,” which grossed ₹62.5 crores on a ₹12 crore budget, alongside the emotional resonance of the trailer, suggests potential for urban multiplex audiences. However, the absence of typical “masala elements,” such as high-energy dance numbers or romantic subplots, may limit its draw in single-screen theaters. Additionally, boycott campaigns linked to Aamir’s visit to Turkey in 2020 and his perceived silence on the 2025 Pahalgam attack may negatively impact attendance, especially in more nationalistic areas.

Although a YouTube pay-per-view release after the theatrical run could bolster revenue, projections estimate a modest lifetime gross of ₹80 to ₹120 crores, which is far from blockbuster status unless strong word-of-mouth drives it, similar to the original “Taare Zameen Par.”

Media Strategies for Sensitive and Responsible Coverage

To ethically cover “Sitaare Zameen Par,” the Indian media should emphasize its inclusive message by showcasing Aamir Khan’s interviews and statements from the production house that highlight the film’s focus on empowerment and authenticity in casting neurodivergent actors. The media should avoid sensationalizing boycott calls or rehashing controversies; instead, they should frame the film as a socially relevant underdog story that resonates with viewers, as noted by Javed Akhtar for its universal appeal.

This approach will help the audience feel connected to the film’s narrative and engage with its themes. Aamir’s stance regarding Operation Sindoor (“justice… I believe in our government”) should be reported factually, avoiding speculative narratives about his political views. The media can promote positive fan reactions, moderate toxic online comments, and educate the public about Down syndrome. Drawing from Western media’s restraint, such as in Kate Middleton’s cancer coverage, will ensure a balance between public interest and respect for the film’s intent and Aamir’s privacy.
