Sushmita Sen Celebrates 31st Anniversary Of Being 1st Indian To Be Crowned Miss Universe
Sushmita Sen made history in 1994 when she became the first Indian to be crowned Miss Universe. At just 18 years old, she achieved this remarkable feat, earning global recognition on May 21, 1994. To celebrate the 31st anniversary of that milestone, Sushmita shared a collection of rarely seen photos on her Instagram account on Wednesday.

Among the images was the iconic moment when she looked stunned upon hearing her name announced as the winner. In her caption, Sen described it as “A historical win that introduced an 18-year-old Indian girl to the Universe!!!”. She reflected on how this victory opened up a world of possibilities, emphasising hope, inclusion, and love.
She further shared, “Travelling the world and having the privilege of meeting some of the most inspiring people… life-defining for sure!” Sen expressed gratitude to her parents, Shubeer and Subhra Sen, for their unwavering support and encouragement. “Happy 31st Anniversary of India’s first-ever victory at Miss Universe!!! To have had the honour of representing my country, I will cherish forever!!!,” she concluded.
Sen also acknowledged the people of Manila, Philippines. It was where she won the crown, and sent a special shoutout to her fellow contestant, Miss Colombia Carolina Gomez. She mentioned that she was celebrating her and thinking of her on that special occasion. “Here’s to dreams, the impossible kinds… for I know, the UNIVERSE conspires in our favour,” she added.

Following her historic win, Sen made her Bollywood debut in Mahesh Bhatt’s 1996 psychological thriller Dastak. She also launched the I Am She – Miss Universe India project from 2010 to 2012. It selected India’s representatives for the Miss Universe pageant. In 2016, she appeared as a judge at the Miss Universe pageant held in Manila. In a 2005 appearance on Koffee with Karan, Sen recalled how she almost withdrew from the Miss Universe competition after learning that Aishwarya Rai was also participating.
